Genesis 22:1-19:
“…He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of
the wood.” Gen. 1:9 (NIV) I’ve read a lot about Abraham’s call of faith as he offered up his promised son for sacrifice, but each time I read this, my thoughts fall on Isaac. At this time, Isaac is about 15 years of age…the same age as my own son. God never tells us Isaac fought Abraham as he was being bound. Surely as he was being tied up and laid on that altar Isaac was well aware of his father’s intent. But he doesn’t say a word. He trusts his father’s obedience. Would my son fight me? Have I been the example of obedience to God to the extent that my own son would understand such a sacrifice? Or would my son fight with me, and run for the nearest source of help? What kind of faith have I instilled in my son…. not only to trust God, but to trust me as his parent? PRAYER: Lord, help me to be the kind of parent that my children can trust no matter what the cost of obedience to you. Amen. ©2001 Caryn Burdine |
